How to Cook
Karuppu Kavuni is traditionally used for desserts like Kavuni Arisi Sweet and for energy-rich porridges, but it can also be cooked like rice.
For Kavuni Sweet / Dessert
- Rinse well and soak overnight (8–10 hours) for best results.
- Drain water, add 3 cups of water for every 1 cup rice, and pressure cook (or slow cook) until soft.
- Add organic jaggery or palm sugar to taste once cooked.
- Finish with freshly grated coconut and ghee.
For Plain Rice
- Wash thoroughly and soak for at least 8 hours.
- Cook in a heavy-bottomed vessel or pressure cooker with 1:3 rice to water ratio.
- Cooking time may range from 30–45 minutes (pressure cook) to 60–75 minutes (open pot).
- Can be enjoyed with curries or made into upma, kanji, or dosa batter mix.
⚜️ Tip: The water drained from cooking (Kavuni Gruel) is highly nutritious, traditionally consumed as a morning energizer.
